"One might think that more time, is all that's needed." Loki said dryly. "But that hasn't been my experience either."

"You are very old." There's a sly little smirk. She's not foolish enough to think Loki could love her.

Oh that look on her was highly attractive. Picking up his wineglass, saluting her with it before taking a drink. No arguments or debating.

"It doesn't mean I haven't sought temporary companionship before."

"I'm sure many more times than I have, given the ridiculous age difference."

She usually likes her partners a little bit older than her, not centuries. But he is so entertaining.

"It is, and is not, such a huge age difference considering the comparative length of the time-span." A moment to do some quick calculations. Also, to curl his foot around her ankle as she had earlier. "I'm somewhere in my early 20s, roughly."

"So now I think you're too young. You're striking out here."

He's not. There's a lull before the second course and she reaches across the table to brush her hand against his.

They're making for a very believable date.

Turning his hand under her own, moving to hold it. "Liar." It's said teasingly, with an amused grin.

"Tell me more about your job?"

The little touches are genuinely sweet and she has to wonder if he's just faking it all.

"I mostly take cases from the ER, so I do all sorts of emergency surgeries. Lot's of gunshots, a fair few stab wounds."

Part of why he was on his best-manners; he knew it would get to her, and provoking her was fun. The truth, which she has no way of knowing, was that he was and was not 'faking it'. Her company had proved surprisingly enjoyable, and Loki thrived on positive attention. He also genuinely enjoyed when he could be affectionate, and get affection in turn--it was just rare. They were playing a 'role' yes, but why not enjoy that role?

"Hence your experience with recognizing how to handle one." His thumb brushed her skin where they held hands. "I dodged. Clumsily." Which was why the armor took the brunt, in a tearing-scrape before the blade penetrated through.

"Wasn't your best dodge, clearly. But yeah, stab wounds don't shock me."

Very little does.

Christine is enjoying their roles. And her affection is real. She likes his company and does find him attractive. There is a nagging level of genuinely liking him that makes her conflicted.

"It was a very good defense system. I avoided the other knives." Entirely conversational, like it happened every day. "I'm honestly not sure if whoever designed it was from Earth." Humans could be very clever after all.

[drpalmer]

"Just miscalculated one knife."

She wonders what sort of stuff he gets up to that has him avoiding an elaborate knife trap.

"Humans have a fondness for elaborate weaponry though, I wouldn't put it past us."

The waiter arrives with their second course and she has to take her hand back from his.

Ferreting out secrets, just as he'd told her.

"You do like to make things complicated." A more general 'you' meaning humans, not her specifically. Her hand is squeezed gently before she can take it back.

"How often do you work? How long are your shifts?"

[drpalmer]

She smiles at that little squeeze.

"I usually work four shifts a week, at ten to eleven hours each." She's worked her way up as a respected surgeon and now gets her pick of shifts.

"They are long days, but very busy so it doesn't feel as bad."

"I imagine you thrive on the frenetic pace. The adrenaline rush." If his experience with training her in self-defense was anything to go by... She'd already admitted that surgeons also liked to feel powerful.

"Do you have a specialty, or is it just 'trauma'?"

[drpalmer]

"I do. I'll probably switch into fewer full shifts and more administrative duties in the future, I can't keep the pace up forever."

She is a realist down to the core.

"Trauma mostly. But I'll get emergency appendectomys and the like as well."

"Appendectomy?" He was sure he knew the procedure, but wasn't quite sure of the terminology.

"I don't see you slowing down anytime soon, though."

[drpalmer]

"Appendix removal. It's a little organ long thought to be vestigial."

She explains, given that Asgardians might not have one at all.

"Probably not for a while. I've finally earned first pick of shifts, which is doctor luxury."

"I believe I mentioned that it seems a thankless task." But there's no bite to his words, just conversation.

"What would you do for fun, if you could do anything?"

[drpalmer]

"You should see how many cards I get at Christmas time." It's her favorite time of year for that reason. She gets cards from so many former patients and their families.

"More travel. Or learn to scuba dive, I'd love to see some coral reefs."

There's a moment where he's trying to remember if he's heard of Christmas... "Yule? Or the holiday that Yule was folded into?"

"So you want to explore more."

[drpalmer]

"Yule." She nods. They've made a good dent in the bottle of wine and she is feeling the blood warming her cheeks from it.

"Basically. Especially since being reminded of how short my life is."

It's a good thing they've also been having food to help absorb the wine.

"All the more reason to live it to the fullest." Spoken like the true hedonist he was, with a sly grin.

"Will you age?"

What she remembers from her mythology, Odin was usually described as old looking.

She's given a curious look, and a nod. "You've seen what I looked like as a chlid." It would just take longer for him.
