She feels that prod and gives him a pointed look before raising her glass to his.

"Interesting encounters."

She's not surprised he tried to influence her at dinner, it was a great time to try to catch her off guard. She will sip her wine and then start to eat though

His expression in return is entirely unapologetic. She gets an approving gesture of his head, somewhere between a bow and a nod. He'll also follow his own words, starting to eat. The presentation was certainly worth the price-tag, even though Loki wasn't actually paying for any of it.

"I think I'd be doing something similar to what I do now."

"Getting stabbed?" She doesn't miss a beat in teasing him.

Under the table her foot brushes his ankle. The food is just as delicious in taste as it is in presentation.

"Ferreting out secrets." Which might involve getting stabbed. If he's surprised, it doesn't show. He leans into it actually, moving slightly to curl his own foot with hers.

It...was something he was actually pondering bringing up to Thor. Maybe. Loki knew himself, and knew there were things he would be willing to do, and believed to be capable of doing, that his brother never could or would. Perhaps he could be the sort who got his hands dirty, so Thor wouldn't have to. If he stayed, that is.

"You could do a lot of good if you wanted." He had shown her a taste of what he was capable of and if he turned those skills to things that were more helpful than harmful, he would be incredible.

"Perhaps." A sip of wine. "But I'm also self-serving enough to wonder what's in it for me."

[drpalmer]

"I'm sure there could be plenty in it for you. Riches, women, men, power. There's a lot that you can win with honey instead of vinegar."

"I'll think about it." Had already been thinking about it, in a way. But that didn't mean he actually would. He would always be the God of Mischief. Sometimes that mischief might simply be for a good purpose, and other times simply to make trouble.

"Why do you read love stories?"

[drpalmer]

She takes a long sip of wine.

"Because I want to be loved? I think everyone does, I've just not had the best relationships and sometimes reading about people falling in love is nice."

Likewise he's quiet, thinking it over. "Love, from my view, is like a dagger." Offered before taking a drink of his own.

"So, pointy?"

It's a real loose metaphor that he's given her here. But she thinks she does see the point he is making.

"Or just dangerous? And able to hurt you."

“It’s a weapon to be wielded far away or up close. You can see yourself in it. It’s beautiful until it makes you bleed. And even if you're very careful, it can hurt you." Said softly, after a pause to be certain he was framing it right.

"It can hurt you, or offer you protection. But yes, there is always a risk when you open yourself to loving someone."

She still thinks it's worth it despite having been hurt before.

Whereas he's not so sure.

"As I said the other night, I don't like the odds." Loki replied softly. But he wasn't going to try and argue her view away from her.

"The odds are rough, I won't disagree on that."

She's had some painful breakups, she can understand why he would protect himself from that pain.

"One might think that more time, is all that's needed." Loki said dryly. "But that hasn't been my experience either."

[drpalmer]

"You are very old." There's a sly little smirk. She's not foolish enough to think Loki could love her.

Oh that look on her was highly attractive. Picking up his wineglass, saluting her with it before taking a drink. No arguments or debating.

"It doesn't mean I haven't sought temporary companionship before."

[drpalmer]

"I'm sure many more times than I have, given the ridiculous age difference."

She usually likes her partners a little bit older than her, not centuries. But he is so entertaining.

"It is, and is not, such a huge age difference considering the comparative length of the time-span." A moment to do some quick calculations. Also, to curl his foot around her ankle as she had earlier. "I'm somewhere in my early 20s, roughly."

"So now I think you're too young. You're striking out here."

He's not. There's a lull before the second course and she reaches across the table to brush her hand against his.

They're making for a very believable date.

Turning his hand under her own, moving to hold it. "Liar." It's said teasingly, with an amused grin.

"Tell me more about your job?"

[drpalmer]

The little touches are genuinely sweet and she has to wonder if he's just faking it all.

"I mostly take cases from the ER, so I do all sorts of emergency surgeries. Lot's of gunshots, a fair few stab wounds."

Part of why he was on his best-manners; he knew it would get to her, and provoking her was fun. The truth, which she has no way of knowing, was that he was and was not 'faking it'. Her company had proved surprisingly enjoyable, and Loki thrived on positive attention. He also genuinely enjoyed when he could be affectionate, and get affection in turn--it was just rare. They were playing a 'role' yes, but why not enjoy that role?

"Hence your experience with recognizing how to handle one." His thumb brushed her skin where they held hands. "I dodged. Clumsily." Which was why the armor took the brunt, in a tearing-scrape before the blade penetrated through.

"Wasn't your best dodge, clearly. But yeah, stab wounds don't shock me."

Very little does.

Christine is enjoying their roles. And her affection is real. She likes his company and does find him attractive. There is a nagging level of genuinely liking him that makes her conflicted.
